I posted the video on my blog as well, but with a caveat about the $450 billion figure. That’s misleading (and inaccurate). From what I can gather, it’s taken from retail & food sales during December (the government reports this number as one category).
Americans spend $350-400 billion on retail & food sales in any given month. I’ve estimated that the amount spent on Christmas during December that wouldn’t be spent otherwise is about $51 billion. Still a large figure compared to the reported $10 billion cost of clean water for Africa.
It’s a pet peeve when Christian groups misuse statistics like that. It’s a great cause, so why open yourself up to unnecessary attack? Anyways…
